Dec. 13 Groundbreaking for Air Force Captain Nathan Nelson
Building Homes for Heroes broke ground on the site of the future home for U.S. Air Force Captain Nathan Nelson in Santa Rose Beach on Dec. 13.
Dozens of supporters, including representatives from Advance Auto Parts and the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors, were on hand on the bright, sunny day to join in the festivities. Twenty members from Captain Nelson's former unit at the Hurlburt Field Air Force Base also attended the ceremony to show their support.
Air Force Captain Nathan Nelson was nearly killed when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his forward operating base in Afghanistan in September of 2013. His body took the brunt of the blast, causing shrapnel to enter his back. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury, collapsed lungs and significant blood loss.
The house is being built by Randy Wise Homes. Construction will be completed in 2017.
Captain Nelson will live in the home with his wife, Jennifer, and their 3-year-old daughter.
